I totally agree Jonathan.
I am a member of several other mailing groups and news groups,
and I have never had 'out of office' replies when I have
contributed to any of them.
Some groups have rules and moderators who enforce the rules.
The downside is that it is time-consuming for the moderators.
A good example is the newsgroup science.physics.research which
has 3 moderators who take turns. I would recommend subscribing to
this well-organised group to see how it works. (The physics
community are still leading the way in email, www, e-prints etc)
