Dear Ron
This is an example of a whole range of memorabilia related to 'The
Absent-Minded Beggar' and sold to help the fund, supported by Kipling,
to help the dependants of soldiers serving in South Africa.
As Andrew Lycett says in his book (p. 319 of the hardback) , quoting
Durbach's 'Kipling's South Africa':
"The song was sung and played in music-halls, at smoking concerts and
drawing-room recitals, and cranked out on barrel-organs all over the
country...The words were printed on every kind of paper and on silk, satin
and linen, and the famous Caton Woodville illustration of a wounded Tommy
appeared on tobacco-jars, ashtrays, cigarette packs, pillow-cases, plates,
card-holders, knives, mugs, jugs and every other conceivable china, brass,
or metal object"
One of our members here, Peter Merry, has a collection of these memorabilia,
buy he is unfortunately not on-line. But Mike Smith knows a good deal about
all this too, and he (and others) may well to have things to add to what I
have said.
Warmest good wishes for the festive season, John R
