I would look in the apocrypha for clues as to the
inspiration for this painting. What is its date? Could
it have been inspired by Christmas carols such as
"When Jesus was a little child," which insert a grain
of recollection of the crucifixion into the Christmas
scene? Also, is Jesus holding a crucifix or a cross?
