there's a nice piece by chrysostom "on earthquakes" in which he urges
people who are in an earthquake to imagine it's the end of the world and
repent. the problem, he laments, is that within 3 weeks they abandon all
their determination to be a better person. maybe new year's resolutions is
a domesticated form of last judgment, like yom kippur.
