The Agencia de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias (Agency of Health
Technology Assessment) in Madrid are working in a european project of
translating medical terminology in several languages. The name is WEBLING
and address the industrial demand for intelligent search services that cross
language barriers.
WEBLING will integrate the components to create a novel pilot search service
tailored for the medical community. It will initially support four
languages: English, French, German and Spanish, and can be adapted for more
in future. An intuitive graphical interface will tie together all the
components with on-line medical directories to furnish a comprehensive
search service to the medical community.
The project is not finished. The results will be:
- automatic recognition of the natural languages used in the document
- automatic classification of the document, e.g. heart disease
- automatic recognition and indexing of word and phrase ‘variants’ under the
base form
- finement modules that enable the user to easily narrow their search
- line subject-specific mono-lingual and bi-lingual dictionaries.

I wonder whether one ought to design a European project on
this? There are currently new calls for proposals for EU
Public Health Programmes. Any takers?
