following the list's discussion earlier this semester on the sex/gender
representation/interpretation of dragons I was intrigued to hear the BBC
Radio 4 programme 'Midweek' on Wednesday 13th December wherein the theatre
production of Tolkein's 'The Hobbit' was discussed. Suffice it to say that
the subject of whether the dragon 'Smaug' could have been presented as a
female was raised because, in the words of the presenter, 'it's very
fashionable'. Next week - wimpoles as haute couture?
