Dear Geo-network,
Ewan Crawford from the University of Glasgow asked me to pass on the
following request. Please send any responses to him at the address
below.
"I'm looking for maps showing locations of coal measures, limestone and
iron ore deposits in the UK. One map per material and one map per
country (i.e. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) would be
ideal.
I'm writing a book of the history of steel and iron making in the UK,
and particularly Lanarkshire Scotland. I would like to demonstrate
that iron and steel working originated in areas where the raw
materials were close at hand.
An additional interest is the history of canal and early tramroads
through to railways which connected the various quarries, pits and
mines to ironworks, steelworks and forges. I'm also keen to show that
when local raw materials ran out works did not necessarily have to
relocate as lines could be built to other areas. I already have
details of the various forms of transport but lack a map which shows
what was "under the ground" in the areas railways reached to.
The maps do not need to be copyright-free as I will re-draw them.
Availability via the web would be ideal.
Thanks very much,
Ewan"
