"Dublin Core Standardisation in Europe"

The purpose:
The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative has been emerging as a main reference in
the metadata world, especially when concerning to the problem of resource
discovery . Since the first moment that it has been a main concern of the
promoters to assure a large participation of individuals, organisations and
communities interested in the development of services and contents for the
Internet.
This workshop intends to promote the discussion and raise the awareness for
he national standardization, in European countries, of proposals considering
the DCMES - Dublin Core Metadata Element Set. Several countries have already
activities in this area (Finland, UK, Denmark, etc.), while others are
starting coming out with standards or relevant activities based on it
(Portugal, Italy, etc.), while others are looking for guidelines. This
meeting is open to any individual, organisation or community interested or
involved in these activities, namely libraries, archives, or relevant
national, regional or community focused standardization organizations.
Workshop schedule and place:
The workshop will take place in the National Library of Portugal (Address:
Campo Grande 83, Lisbon). The sessions will start in the afternoon of
February 1st (02:00 PM), and will finish by noon of February 2nd (a meeting
of the Dublin Core Advisory Committee will take place after the workshop).
The agenda will comprise invited introductions to the Dublin Core Metadata
Initiative, presentations by the participants of important initiatives and
local cases, and a final discussion. Updated information will be available

Participation and dissemination:
This workshop is promoted by the Standardization Forum of the DELOS Network
of Excellence on Digital Libraries (<http://www.ercim.org/delos>).
The participation is open to all the interested participants. To register
(there is are no fees), please send an email to [log in to unmask] , with a
position statement (from one page until... your limit). We'll appreciate
very much descriptions, concerning a specific country, of the state of the
art of Dublin Core adoption, of standardisation initiatives in process or
planed, reports of previous experiences, or simply a description of
opportunities to be explored.
The contributions and the final conclusions of the workshop will be
published as a DELOS Report.
