Cecelia,
I assume you've noticed the example in Michelangelo's paintings on the
Sistine chapel ceiling, and another example by Raphael in the Stanze.
I always assumed it came from the New Testament figure of the whore of
Babylon, though I've not traced the iconography or looked at monastic
examples.
