<How right you are, Christopher - but 'south Italy' is not an
undifferentiated mass. The intriguing part of the art work in question
is that we have an abbot in Messina (Sicily) commissioning an artifact
for Rossano (Calabria), and in the artifact itself we find Roman motifs.
The whole thing was in 1137 (time of Roger II of Sicily). That suggests
some connections among Sicily-Calabria-Rome, which could be a fruitful
object of study (I think). "South Italy' is of course correct, but does
not give any details.
