Dear All,
Nirit Ben-Aryeh Debby has written a fascinating article on the attitude
of preachers to the use of art as a didactic tool. Her article
considers the preachers: Dominican Giovanni Dominici (1356Ð1419), who
preached in Florence between 1400 and 1406; the Franciscan
Bernardino da Siena (1380Ð1444), who preached in Florence in
1424 and 1425 and in Siena in 1425 and 1427; and the famous
Dominican Girolamo Savonarola (1452Ð98), who preached in
Florence in the last decade of the fifteenth century. It will appear
in September in C. Muessig (ed.), The Sermon in the Middle Ages (Brill,
2001) [shameless plug!]. I do not want to steal Nirit's thunder so I
shan't say more. However, the article does touch upon some of the
issues raised in this fruitful thread of discussion.
Yours,
Carolyn
