Otfried,
You are quite right to suspect that the Newcastle (NSW, Australia) rare book
collection is not very developed - in medieval matters anyway. Any further
offers of medieval manuscripts in this price range will be gratefully
received. Incidentally, the British Library shop was recently offering
single pages of facsimile (ie printed and gilded) manuscript pages for well
over fifty pounds. At the current exchange rate, sixty Australian dollars is
about 35 US dollars.
I am not quite sure why our archivists did not contact the history
department's one medievalist (me) - but feel rather peeved that my esteemed
colleagues in the classics department seem to have had all the fun.
Maybe this might inspire a new thread on doing medieval studies at regional
universities? Next year, I intend to include a tutorial where the first year
medieval history students (and we currently get about 150 of them) go and
have a look at Denis's bit of Peter Lombard. The resources on the internet
make it more and more possible for students to have access to electronic
medieval sources, but it will make a real difference to have something
original for them to look at. We might even have them attempt their own
transcription.
