Dear Colleagues,
I am writing a dissertation on an exegetical work by Isidore of Seville and
a question has arisen that I hope you can help me with. We know from a
library list (actually, a poem enscribed on the library walls) that Isidore
owned some of the works of John Chrysostom. My question is whether those
works would be in Greek or in Latin translation. To answer that, I need
(among other information) to know whether there were any Latin translations
of Chrysotom by about AD 600. Is anyone out there aware of such
translations, and could you point me to literature on them?
If I may also ask a broader question (which I may have asked the list
before; I don't remember now): Those of you out there who have worked on
critical editions, what have you found to be the most effective way (or
least ineffective way, perhaps) to format your edition? Do you use a
standard word processing package (eg, Word or WordPerfect) and set up each
page individually, text, apparatus criticus, apparatus fontium? Are there
such programs as "edition processors", not collation programs, but programs
that help one to produce a page that actually looks like an edition once
the textual work is done? Do you find publishing/typesetting software to
be helpful (eg, Adobe)? Do you type it out on a manual typewriter? Do you
just hand your notes to a publisher and let him/her sort it out (as a near
approximation to God)?
Thank you all very much for your help!
