Hello everyone,
Greetings from a very wet and wind-blown Portsmouth!
We have just acquired a folded copy of Greenwood's Map of
Hampshire (1826). Our intention is to put it on permanent display in
our building, so I would be very interested in any suggestions that
members of this list might have on techniques for mounting historical
maps and putting them on public display.
The map is 148 x 157cm, mounted on linen in 60 panels. Tinho has
suggested that it could be encapsulated in polyester or attached to
a display board using perspex strips. I am particularly interested in
the names and addresses of any companies that specialize in display
cases, for the museum industry perhaps. What I think we need is a
glass-fronted, wall-mountable display case, deep enough to also
exhibit the maps's rather nice leather slip case.
Any suggestions could be added to Tinho's "Guide to UK Suppliers of
Map Curator's Bits and Bobs" (Cartographiti No.58).
Best wishes.
David
