A few more additions to the increasing bibliography on Fo
performance and translation.
A number of years ago there were performances in Birmingham of
Trumpets and Raspberries (Clacson, trombette e pernacchi) at the
old Crescent Theatre, and at the Midland Arts Centre performances
of The worker knows 300 words etc (L'operaio conosce 300
parole...), directed by the late David Hirst, whose work on Fo you
will all know. Some of you may also remember the Channel 4
version of Accidental death, which students have found useful in
showing how written text and performance can be very different. In
addition, the Allardyce Nicholl theatre here at the University has also
seen performances of the Franca Rame monologues.
On translation, I have a text of One was nude and one wore tails
(L'uomo nudo e l'uomo in frak), produced by an organisation called
"Theatretexts". The translation/adaptation is Ed Emery's. I don't
know if the group is still in existence, but they list a number of other
Fo plays for which they have translations:
The good that a burglar can bring (Non tutti i ladri vengono per
nuocere)
Corpse for sale (Un morto da vendere)
Housepainters have no memories (Gli imbianchini non hanno ricordi)
Women undressed and bodies to be dispatched (I cadaveri si
spediscono e le donne si spogliano)
Archangels don't play pinball (Gli arcangeli non giocano a flipper)
He who steals a foot is lucky in love (Chi ruba un piede è fortunato in
amore)
The comic mysteries (Mistero buffo)
