Tensions and Temptations
Women Translating the Literature of Exile
Thursday 1 March 2001
Three remarkable women have left chronicles of their work as
translators of exiled German writers during the Second World War.
The writings of Willa Muir, Jean Starr Untermeyer and Katherine
Lowe Porter are sensitive to both the political and gendered aspects
of their translation experience. These accounts recall the history of
social activism to which women translators have contributed (in
particular during the Abolitionist movement of the 19th century) and
anticipate the experiences of contemporary translators of exiled
writers, such as Suzanne Jill Levine’s brilliant translations of the
Cuban Cabrera Infante. They raise questions about the gendered
identity of translators and the historical and political role of
translations.
All welcome. Admission free. To secure a place at the lecture,
