VALENCY IN PRACTICE
CALL FOR PAPERS
A two-day symposium on valency and its practical application
is to be held at the University of Reading on September
21-22, 2001.
The organisers of the symposium (Ian Roe, Klaus Fischer,
Alan Cornell) are currently compiling a valency dictionary
for English-speaking learners of German and have also
worked in the field of valency in English. Although it is
therefore envisaged that the main focus will be on German
and English lexicography, papers are invited on all aspects
of the application of valency (grammars, dictionaries in
other languages, word-field lexica, etc). Topics to be
considered could include: presentation of ongoing projects;
selection of material; layout of entries; use of corpora;
theory in practice (e.g. complements/adjuncts); theory
versus user-friendliness; syntactic/semantic/ pragmatic
valency; text-specific valencies. Papers on valency theory
are also welcome, although such papers should preferably
relate to questions of application.
Contributions should be in English or German and approximately
30 minutes in length (maximum 40 minutes). It is planned that
(a selection of) the proceedings will be published, but papers
already accepted for publication elsewhere will be welcome.
Please contact any of the organisers with offers of papers or
general enquiries (colleagues/postgraduates wishing to attend
without giving a paper will be very welcome). Brief synopses of
papers should be sent to Ian Roe by May 31, 2001. Details of
accommodation will be sent to all intending participants in
March/April.
