Changes to <all> Mailbase lists with effect from next Monday morning
27th November:
See the bulletin below:
To summarise, if all works well, the only thing you need do is change
the address to which you < send > your messages.
The new address will be:
[log in to unmask]
You should continue to receive messages in the normal way.
The web address of the list becomes:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/france-media.html
The reason for the change (beyond our control) is that a new provider
(JISC) had been awarded the national franchise.

Mailbase to JISCmail Migration:
Bulletin No 1
Why JISCmail?
The Mailbase service which provides electronic
discussion list management for the academic
community is changing. Following a recent open
procurement, the body which funds the provision of
information systems for the UK higher and further
education and research community has awarded the
contract to provide the National Academic Mailing
List Service to the Council for the Central
Laboratories of the Research Councils (CCLRC) with
effect from 27 November 2000. The name Mailbase
will be retained by the University of Newcastle,
the current Mailbase service provider, so the new
service from CCLRC will have a new name, JISCmail.
The service will be based upon the well known
LISTSERV software. This will result in some changes
to the user interface. Details of the differences
and the transition arrangements are available on
the JISCmail web site at
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/transition.htm

Passwords at JISCmail
JISCmail uses passwords in a different way to
Mailbase. Passwords are linked to an individual
e-mail address, the one which you have used either
as a member of a list or as an owner or moderator.
List Members
List members may very well never need a password.
As a list member it will only become necessary for
you to register a password if you wish to use the
Web to post to any list or view the archives of a
closed list or change your list membership options,
such as mail or digest. In order to register a
password go to the JISCmail Home Page
www.jiscmail.ac.uk and follow the navigation
provided. Don't worry if you forget your password,
it is very easy to register a new one.
List Owners
List owners need a password in order to reach the
Web Administration pages at JISCmail and for
sending certain list administration commands by
e-mail. As the password is linked to your e-mail
address, for example [log in to unmask], once you
have reached the Web list administration front page
you will be presented with a pull-down list of all
the lists of which the e-mail address
[log in to unmask] is an owner.
Access to files associated with lists: a files
password
If a list owner wishes to restrict web access to
files associated with lists the list will require a
files password which will be available from the
list owner.
Finding your list's home page on the Web at
JISCmail
The JISCmail Web is at www.jiscmail.ac.uk
If your lists is accessible via the web the URL to
its home page will change from
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/LISTNAME/
to
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/LISTNAME.html
Information relevant to list owners only
List Title and Description: Please chose a list
title
Listserv has the concept of a name, title and a
description for a list. The title, which can be up
to 75 characters long, is displayed on the List's
Web Home Page. During the migration of lists from
Mailbase to JISCmail we shall plant the first 75
characters of the Mailbase list description in the
title field and copy the full description into the
description field. Both the title and the
description are returned in the response to a
review command. You will most probably want to
devise a short title to represent the purpose of
your list and use it to replace the information
planted there during migration. If you would prefer
the JISCmail team to update your title for you
please contact the help line giving the list name
and the replacement title
URLs referencing files associated with lists will
need editing
A URL such as
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/LISTNAME/files/test
page.htm
will still continue to work, as the Mailbase
service will still have this file. Any updates to
this file, done at JISCmail, will not be reflected
at Mailbase. The URL to access the file at JISCmail
should be
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/files/LISTNAME/testpage.h
tm
If you have HTML files associated with your list
which have URL links between them, these links will
need editing in the same way in order to keep your
file system self-consistent.
If you would like help in editing these links in
the files you have stored at JISCmail, the JISCmail
team will be happy to advise or do the editing for
you. This may have to be delayed until a few weeks
after the Mailbase-JISCmail transition as we
anticipate the team being quite busy then. However,
as a copy of the existing files will still be
available from Mailbase, a short delay will
hopefully not cause too much inconvenience.
