Call for Application for the:
"European Regional Master in Democracy and Human Rights in South-East
Europe"
University of Sarajevo and University of Bologna in cooperation with partner
Universities from South-East Europe and EU
The European Regional Master in Democracy and Human Rights in South-East
Europe is established through the joint efforts of the participating
universities from South-East Europe and EU, coordinated by the University of
Sarajevo. It has the support of European Union. The program lasts three
terms and it will start on January 15, 2001. In the first term (January 15 -
June 15, 2001) students are taught together in Sarajevo by prominent
lecturers and tutors from the participating universities and experts from
IGOs and NGOs.
The lessons will be organized on five main topics with a team leader for
each of them:
Philosophy of Human Rights (Prof. Gvozden Flego, University of Zagreb),
Democracy (Prof. Georgi Ivanov, University of Skopje),
Ethnicity and Religion (Prof. Dusan Janjic, Forum for Ethnic Relations,
Belgrade),
Social and Economic Rights (Prof. Vesna Bojicic, London School of Economics)
Protection and Implementation of Human Rights (Prof. Wolfgang Benedek,
Karl-Franzens University of Graz).
In the second term (June 18 - August 4, 2001), students will go on
internship in the region. During the third term (September 1 - October 14,
2001) students will be hosted in Italy, at the Residential Center in
Bertinoro, in order to write a dissertation. The final examination will take
place in Sarajevo (October 22-28, 2001). After successfully passing exams
and a dissertation, students will be awarded the degree of the European
Regional MA in Democracy and Human Rights in South-East Europe, recognized
by the University of Bologna.
Applicants are required to hold a university degree of high standard,
normally in a filed relevant to human rights, in particular disciplines in
law, social and political sciences and the humanities. Fluency in English is
a prerequisite for the admission. Good results of TOEFL (or equivalent: e.g.
IELTS) are required. Applicants should not be older than 35. The criteria
used during the selection process are: academic ability and background,
experience, strong motivation and language competence.
30 places are allocated to students from six countries of the South-East
Europe involved in the program (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria,
Croatia, Macedonia and FR Yugoslavia), and 5 to EU students.
