Position description: Full time, tenure-track appointment. Assistant
Professor of ART HISTORY WITH SPECIALTY IN MODERN DESIGN AND
ARCHITECTURE. Appointee will teach undergraduate and graduate courses
including a lower division design history survey course and 19th and 20th
century design and architecture courses at the advanced undergraduate
and graduate level.
Effectiveness in academic assignment and continuing scholarly
achievement are required to achieve tenure and promotion. Responsibilities
will include assisting with departmental advising, program and curriculum
development, student recruitment, grant writing, and associated
organizational responsibilities. Knowledge of computer applications in
teaching the history of art and design is desirable.
Applicant must have the ability to address the needs of a student
population of great diversity--in age, cultural background, ethnicity,
primary language and academic preparation--through course materials,
teaching strategies and advisement.
Qualifications: Earned PhD with 2 years university-level teaching
experience, professional publications, and knowledge of appropriate
foreign and/or computer languages. Appointee will be selected on the
basis of demonstrated excellence in teaching and professional
achievements. Candidate must demonstrate awareness of, and sensitivity
to, the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have
been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other
comparable experience
General Information: The School of Art & Design, with 10 program fields
in the areas of Fine Art, Design and Art History, each headed by an
Associate Director, has over 90 faculty members, 1400 undergraduate
majors and 100 MA/MFA candidates. There are 40 undergraduate art history
majors and 15+ graduate students in the field. Thirty-four full-time and
over 55 part-time faculty and Graduate Teaching Assistants teach in the
School supported by fourteen clerical and technical staff. The School
celebrated its 85th year in 1997. SJSU is an accredited institutional
member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Art
History courses are supported by a full time Visual Resources
Librarian and a Resource center including over 12,000 digital images,
270,000 slides, and related videos, CDs and other materials.
San Jose State University is California's oldest institution of public
