Also as a serial grant applicant (ESRC, EU, DFID, SSRC, World Bank etc) I
disagree with Adam. We often appoint at £20k + without problems. One of the
tricks is not to get all your money from the ESRC, of course - there are
plenty of other sources for substantial grants. Another is to have a
supportive Department that can offer additional money or other benefits to
researchers on short contracts - some can do so.
The problem I face is getting anything more than low costings for in-country
researchers (primarily in Africa), and also getting day-rates for people
without regular salaries, such as consultants - research councils don' t
like paying those.
