Modern Trends in German-Jewish Historiography

Michael Brenner holds the Chair of Jewish History and Culture at the
University of Munich, the first such chair (established 1997) at a German
university. He studied in Heidelberg, Jerusalem and Columbia University in
New York, and previously taught at Brandeis University and Indiana
University. Among his publications are The Renaissance of Jewish Culture in
Weimar Germany (Yale University Press 1996, German ed. Munich: C.H. Beck,
2000) and After the Holocaust: Rebuilding Jewish Lives in Post-War Germany
(Princeton University Press, 1997, German edition, Munich: C.H. Beck 1995).
He is co-author and co-editor of the four-volume German-Jewish History in
Modern Times (Columbia University Press, 1997-98, also in German and Hebrew
editions). He is also co-editor of In Search of Jewish Community: Jewish
Identities in Germany and Austria, 1918-1933 (Indiana University Press,
1998) and Zionistische Utopie - israelische Wirklichkeit: Staat und Religion
in Israel (Munich: C.H. Beck 1999). He serves as chairman of the
Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft des Leo Baeck Instituts in
Deutschland, and is a member of the Academic Advisory Committee of the
Jewish Museum in Berlin.
