I think as I have posted previously, the French have made it law that no
more than 10% of bodyweight should be carried as a norm - with 20% being
the upper limit for 'occasional episodes'!

Another factor to evaluate may be the new trend in backpacks being set with
the single wide strap set diagonally across the chest.
Would anyone know about studies carried out on such items?

i got this from mecscape a year ago -
new york.oct 18, 1999 (reuters health) results of a new survey of more
than 100 pediatritians show thet more than half have cared for a child who
presented with back pain thet could be attributed to carrying heavy
backpack slyle book bages.
pediatricians say that a backpack thet weighs more than 20% of the
child's body weight is potentially injurious. the survey was conducted by
the american academy of orthopaedic surgeons and presented here at a
briefing........dr. alexander said that is apears that student backpack
apears to be getting heavier. she noted that some schools have eliminatad
lockers for securityreasons. backpacks have evolved into a kind of
"portable life support system".
not much data exist on the safety of backpacks, and most that do exist
come from the millitary. but the backpacks used by soldiers and widerness
backpackers are equipped with frame and hip straps that are designed to
keep heavy weight off the spine and shoulders. students backpacks are
getting bigger but the design is not changing. dr. alexsander recommended
that backpacks weigh even less than 20% of body weight for very young
children. wide padded shoulder starps, a padded back and hip strap, or even
a backpack on wheels make good sense.... buying a second set of books is an
expensive option, but in some cases it may be indicated......
hope it helps,
