Corticosteriods and CAL (aka COPD, COLD, etc...)
================================================
Dr Siff,
you mentioned something the other day about about corticosteriods
having an adverse affect on diaphragm function. I'm new to pretty much
everything (although I think you knew that already!), and so I hope
you don't mind answering a few questions for me.
Are all 'steriods' corticosteroids?
In a lecture on CAL (COPD), it was mentioned that a patient's cause of
obstruction is generally more with emphysema origin, or the chronic
bronchitis component, and medication is administered accordingly.
(okay, I know that sentence was structured awkwardly).
And for patients whose cause is more the chronic bronchitis component,
steroids are administered in an attempt to assist air flow.
(I think you can see where i'm heading now...)
Would these steroids therefore cause further complication? Or at best
just counteract the gains made in the airways due to medication?
Your thoughts??
