I am currently involved in a Department of Health review of the Safety and
Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures (SERNIP) which is based at
the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in The Royal Society of Medicine
Building.
I would like to hear from anyone on the mailing list with comments about the
work of SERNIP over the last years (it was set up in 1996), whether you have
actually heard of it, or used it. Also, I would be interested in comments
about how new interventional procedures should be assessed for safety and
efficacy. Where should this work be done? Is the Academy the right place?
How should the evidence be gathered (bearing in mind that these are new
procedures, done not only by surgeons but also by cardiologists,
radiologists, anaesthetists etc).
