THE CONFERENCE
An international conference: The End of Socialism..? - 10 Years on...
Date: 4-5 May, 2001. Location: University of Westminster, London, UK.

Geographers Post-Socialist Geographies Research Group, in association
with the Regional Studies Association and the School of Social
Sciences, Humanities and Languages of the University of Westminster.
Confirmed keynote speakers include Peter Marcuse, Mark Blacksell, Mike
Bradford, Tim Unwin, Andrew Tickle.
This conference aims to consider a full range of issues associated
with post-socialist transformation. It aims to attract a
multi-disciplinary collection of speakers from geography, politics,
sociology, cultural studies, planning, history, economics and other
related disciplines. Papers will be considered on any post-socialist
area, including the former-USSR, East and Central Europe, China and
Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The conference will focus on five themes of post-socialist
transformation. Each theme has a ‘convenor’ who will consider offers
of papers and organise the theme. People from any academic discipline
are welcome to submit proposals for papers or complete modules or
requests for further information to the gatekeepers as indicated
below:

SUBMITTING A PAPER OR A MODULE
If you wish to have a paper considered for inclusion contact the
appropriate convenor with the following information: a paper title; an
abstract of up to 250 words; your name and full contact details
including e-mail address.
Convenors can also consider proposals for complete modules of papers.
Modules are roughly 1 hour long and can contain 4 long papers, or a
series of short papers with a discussant or even a panel/discussants
format. In these instances please contact the convenor by sending: a
module title; a 300 word description of the module; an indication of
the participants and their paper titles; an indication of the module
format; your name and full contact details including e-mail address.
(Full details will subsequently be required of any accepted modules).
In each case send the proposals to the convenor(s) of the theme you
wish to appear in. An electronic format is preferable, either by
e-mail or on disk (preferably in Word format (*.doc) or WordPerfect
(*.wpd) or as an ASCII DOS text file) accompanied by hard copy.
Otherwise please post/fax hard copy.
Deadline for submitting abstracts or module proposals: 15th January
2001.
CONFERENCE ORGANISATION
In addition to keynote speakers, there will also be a conference
dinner (optional). Accommodation is not part of the Conference
Package. A list of suitable accommodation in proximity to the
Conference venue will be provided with the registration documentation.
Special conference rates for accommodation are being negotiated.
REGISTRATION
Full details of registration and fees will be distributed at a later
date to presenters and other participants.
The conference fee will be approximately £130. This will cover
refreshments, lunches and the conference dinner. A Conference Abstract
Book will also be provided. It is planned to generate at least one
major publication from the contributed papers.
