Gustav Klimt: Portraits of European Women
September 20 2000 - January 7 2001
Fifty of Gustav Klimt's paintings of women can be seen at the
Austrian Gallery Belvedere. This millennium exhibition offers more
than a comprehensive overview of the portraits of woman painted by
Klimt around 1900: from his early historicizing portraits, allegorical
pictures of women and erotic drawings, to his classical, large-format
paintings depicting women at the threshold of the modern age and
elevating the portrait to a complete work of art.
The Austrian Gallery juxtaposes Klimt's highly ornamented
creations with works by his colleagues like Egon Schiele, Oskar
Kokoschka and Eduard Manet.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on
Thursdays until 9 p.m.
