"The Black Gaze" is a three-day international Conference organised to
celebrate the new millennium by taking stock of the landmarks of African
and African-Diasporic contributions to, and perspectives on literature,
visual culture and society. It will focus on literature, film,
painting, sculpture and photography from Africa, the Caribbean and the
British and American African-Diaspora. The conference will address the
following issues, among others:
-Defining the Black Gaze
-African norms of cultural production:
-Reception, mediation, dissemination and consumption of African-world Arts
-Discourses of authenticity
-Languages of identity
-Identity and difference
-Knowledge and community
-Identity and Violence
-Dissemination
-Popular and local cultures
-Literature/art and Power
-Gender/Race/Class and African identity
-The Black Gaze and its Future
It will draw together a diverse group of international scholars in the
field of African-world culture and arts and will also offer upcoming
scholars and post-graduate students the opportunity to share their views
with a larger public.
