Developing a User-Centred Requirements Engineering Process for Air Traffic
Control Systems
City Universitys Centre for HCI Design is designing a requirements
engineering process for EuroControl, the authority for European Air
Traffic Management. EuroControl will apply the process to develop a
stakeholder requirements specification and system requirements
specification for CORA-2, a system that will provide computer-based
assistance for air traffic controllers during conflict resolution
activities, when one or more aircraft are in a potentially dangerous
situation. Features of this requirements engineering process include that
is user-centred, use-case- and scenario-driven, and that is recognises the
importance of the controllers work context and tasks when specifying the
new system. The process will include methods, techniques and prototype
software tools that we will specialise to the ATM domain. The work
undertaken at City University will give the successful applicants
first-hand experience of state-of-the-art user-centred requirements
engineering processes, methods, techniques and software tools, task
analysis and work context description techniques, and fitting these
requirements and task analysis techniques with Rationals UML approach.
The first post (Post 1) requires academic and/or industrial experience in
user-centred requirements engineering techniques. Some software
implementation experience would be desirable. The second post (Post2)
requires human-computer interaction, task analysis, user modelling and
contextual work analysis knowledge and experience. Both posts require
excellent presentation and management skills, an interest in applying
leading-edge research to real-world problems, and the readiness to travel
to Paris and Brussels to meet EuroControl staff.
Candidates should have a good first degree in computer science, software
engineering, human-computer interaction, cognitive science or related
disciplines.
Informal enquiries may be addressed Dr Neil Maiden (020-7477-8412,
