The online paper "Reforms in Computer Education that are
Possible for Japan" has just been published in Tokyo by the
Child Research Net: http://www.childresearch.net/ (or in
Japanese: http://www.crn.or.jp/ ) under Educational Visions:
http://www.childresearch.net/CYBRARY/EVISION/2000/STEVE.HTM
The paper explains what has been done locally and can
be done nationally by Japanese educators themselves,
advocating two literacies: in networked computing
and written English. How 40 4th grade children were
successfully introduced to the Internet and international
communication via a Web tour of their interests and a
Web chat meeting in English is reported. It summarizes
answers to questions presented at a panel discussion on
"Education in the Information Age" in Tokyo at the Center
for Global Communications (GLOCOM) of the International
University of Japan: http://www.glocom.org/
