Are you sure it is shin splints, (MTSS/ tenoperostitis)?
If so the type of "rehab" I do consists of
i. Moderation of aggravating activities
ii Biomechanical assessment (e.g. pronation a common cause), check
shoes may need orthotics etc
iii. deep soft tissue therapy - including pressure to the involved
soleus, (flexor dig longus and tib posterior?) adding active plantar and
dorsiflexion with this going on
iv. Cryotherapy - ice massage with cryocup ice block etc
v. Can try acupuncture/dry needling to tightened (esp soleus) muscles
v. Check for muscle weakness/tightness e.g. weak anterior compartment
muscles, glut control etc
vi. Graduated return to training consistent with normal rehab
principles
