It surely goes without saying on this list, but I'll say it anyway: Sept
14th, the feast of the exaltation of the Holy Cross, marked the end of the
summer season in the monastic calendar. Benedict's rubrics for a more robust
(and frequent) diet in the summer ends today (I think today begins what is
called the 'great fast' in the Eastern tradition) and the longer hymns at
the office are begun.

Subject: FEAST 14 September
Today, 14 September, is the feast of ...
* Maternus (fourth century)
- first bishop of Cologne of whom there is 'historical' evidence;
there are, however, differing vitae of a St Maternus for this date
* Exaltation of the Holy Cross (629)
- celebration of the veneration of the relics of the Cross at
Jerusalem after Emperor Heraclius had recovered them from the Persians
who had taken them some 15 years earlier
* Notburga, virgin (c. 1313)
- patron of Tirolese domestic servants
