Health Promotion: the Theoretical Debate
A one day seminar to consider current theories of health promotion
The Showroom, Sheffield, Friday 17th November 2000
This is the fourth annual seminar on theory in health promotion. The previous
seminars were very successful with participants welcoming the opportunity to
hear and debate with leading thinkers on a variety of issues concerning public
health and health promotion. This year's programme again features a hot line up
of speakers who will present a theoretical perspective on some vital issues of
health promotion practice, for today and for the future.
Martine Stanish, Social and Community Development, Sheffield Health, will give a
paper on "Asylum seekers, what can they tell us about our health and health
promotion services? " Martine will talk about her work with asylum seekers and
the challenges it poses for meeting their needs and the social, ethical and
political issues raised
Pete Alcock, Professor of Social Policy and Administration, and Head of
Department of Social Policy and Social Work (whew!) Birmingham University, will
pose the question (and discuss it too) "Should we invest in social capital?"
James Munro, Clinical Senior Lecturer, Medical Care Research Unit, Sheffield
University, and editor of Health Matters, will ask "Will NHS Direct promote
health?"
Alan Beattie, Professor Health Promotion, University College, St Martins,
Lancaster, will discuss the changing fortunes of dialogical education in
the health context
Martin White, Senior Lecturer in Public Health, University of Newcastle Upon
Tyne, addresses "Resources for health: the Holy Grail of health promotion?"
Martin will draw on practical examples to characterise the nature of health
promoting resources, and build the theory.
Sue Loughlin, Women's Health Co-ordinator, Glasgow Health Board, on "Sex,
gender and women's health-the missing inequality"
Martin Carraher, Principal Lecturer, Health Promotion, Centre for Food
Policy, Thames Valley University, will present a paper on "Health promotion and
food policy, the battleground"
Ewan Armstrong, Health Promotion Consultant and Trainer, will present a paper
that is a third in a series presented over the last few years, dealing with the
identity of health promotion, entitled" Health promotion part 3-the journey
home." It will deal with how encounters with public health can help health
promotion rediscover its roots.
Then you can journey home.
The event will be chaired by Lee Adams
