Selo the Seal Boy and Poobah the Pygmy challenged a law forbidding
"...exhibit for pay or compensation any crippled or physically
distorted, malformed or disfigured man, woman or child in any circus,
show or similar place..." They wished to continue to make their living
as they had, as a show. In October 1972, the Supreme Court of Florida
found in their favor.
This entire story is paraphrased (except the quotes of the law) from
Leslie Fiedler, _Freaks : Myths and Images of the Secret Self_ (NY,NY
Simon and Schuster, 1978)ISBN 0-671-22505-7 p.258. The entire section,
if not the entire book, should be read for full comprehension.
