Sorry for cross posting but I amdetermined to get to the bottom of my
problem!
I am attempting to undertake biodegradation capacity calculations. The
calculations firstly involve identifying contaminants of concern and then
stoichiometrically balancing equations which describe their natural
attenuation under aerobic and anerobic conditions for the varying terminal
electron acceptors e.g oxygen, nitrate reduction, sulfate reduction, iron
reduction and methanogensis.
An example for napthalene would be as follows:
Oxidation
12O2 + napthalene = 10CO2 + 4H2O
Nitrate reduction
9.6nitrate + 9.6protons + napthalene = 10CO2 + 8.8H2O + 4.8N2
Fe reduction
48Fe(OH)3 + 96protons + napthalene = 10CO2 + 48Fe2+ + 124H2O
Sulafte reduction
6sulfate + 12protons + napthalen = 10CO2 + 6H2S + 4H2O
Methanogenesis
8H2O + napthalene = 4CO2 + 6methane
I have attempted to balance the above equations for the following
contaminants but have had no luck:
butylbenzene
undecane
tridecane
decane
tetradecane
dodecane
hexadecane
dimethylnapthalene
bis (2 ethylhexyl)phthalate
Could someone please help me, or point me in the direction
look forward to hearing from you
