Netskills Workshop:
Server-Side Site Management Techniques

09:30 - 16:30 Tuesday 10th October 2000 University of Newcastle

As the size and complexity of web sites increase, and users and authors
demand greater functionality and frequently updated content, effective
site management becomes essential.

Server-side technologies can offer sophisticated facilities to ease the
site management task and provide effective tools to support a well
managed web site. These may include: using server-driven templates to
maintain a consistent style, restricting access, use of cookies and
session variables to make sites more "user friendly", custom error
messages, time/date stamps and logging user access.

This workshop is aimed at people who provide web content for the
internet or an internal intranet and wish to learn more about
server-based site management techniques.

The workshop is principly based on Microsoft ASP/IIS technology but the
techniques and concepts investigated are generic and can be applied to
other types of web servers (e.g. Apache)

This is not intended to be a complete guide to web server or NT
administration but covers practical tools and techniques of web site
management.

Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.

Topics covered will include:
 * Using server-side technology to enhance site functionality
 * Password protection and IP restriction
 * Browser detection
 * Templates and server side includes
 * Page redirection and site navigation
 * Time and date stamps
 * Email response forms
 * Cookies and session variables
 * Error messages and log files

By the end of the workshop participants will have:
 * Developed and used templates to apply a "house style" to manage
   common content across several pages
 * Developed pages to deliver browser/user specific content
 * Created pages accessed via a password
 * Investigated the use of page redirects for site management and
   navigation
 * Investigated the use of cookies and session variables to "maintain
   state" between pages
 * Created a simple email response form
 * Added time and date stamps to pages
 * Explored the anatomy of a web site including log files and custom
   error messages

Workshop Requirements:
Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web through a
browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, and MUST have authored
web pages using HTML and be familiar with the concepts of publishing
material to a web server. No previous experience of web server
administration is necessary. Knowledge of basic HTML tags such as for
including images and hyperlinks is essential, and experience of using
Windows for opening and closing applications such as web browser would
be helpful.

The cost of the workshop is 110 for participants from higher and
further education. The workshop fee for other public sector
participants is
 135 and the fee for commercial and business sector participants is
 195.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
