Having recently been accused of being a lurker :-)..... I have delayed
contributing till I got hold of the article saying you could do it! It is
Brickman KR, Krupp K et al, Typing and screening of blood from intraosseous
access. Ann Emerg Med
1992 21: 4 414/85 - 417/88
I also discussed it with our blood bank. The hospital which has supported
our A and E for many years has done IO crossmatch without difficulty in the
past - in fact they said it was "easy" (apparently!). The other hospital
which has only recently taken on A and E, had never heard of it and was
initially extremely sceptical, but having spoken to their colleagues who
have done it and a consultant haematologist, is now proposing to offer it as
a service without further ado (but they did say they wanted one or two
practices first!). So the thread has been very useful in clarifying things
in my place - thanks Cliff for raising it.
Iwould be very careful indeed before starting to teach that it is not
possible or even that it is difficult. It could cause a lot of confusion and
this is exactly how unfounded rumours start. You can also do Uand Es (Check
with your lab though first) "blood" cultures etc. A conventional full blood
count is obviously not possible by the nature of the fact it is not blood -
I make no apology for stating the obvious here as I've seen it requested on
many occasions!
Best wishes
Fiona Jewkes
