I have posted a short paper -- "A Grammar of Dublin Core" -- at
http://www.gmd.de/People/Thomas.Baker/DC-Grammar.html. An abstract:
Dublin Core is a small language for making a particular class
of statements about resources. Like natural languages, it has
a vocabulary of word-like tokens; two classes of tokens that
reflect their function within sentences -- elements and
qualifiers, analogous to nouns and adjectives; and a syntax for
arranging words into statements according to a simple pattern.
The paper puts this metadata "pidgin" into the context of the current
discussion on "application profiles" -- implementation schemas that mix
and match elements from Dublin Core with elements from other namespaces
and standards (see Rachel Heery's paper at
http://homes.ukoln.ac.uk/~lisrmh/app-prof.htm). It concludes with a
two-page appendix comparing the grammars of Dublin Core and RDF.
I will be out of email touch for awhile but look forward to discussing
these issues in September and at DC-8 in Ottawa.
