Mailbase encourages list owners to remind list members every now and then
about good practice and list etiquette - this is one of those e-mails.
1) Please don't send messages with attachments to the list - mailbase are
very unkeen on it for a number of reasons - the following is from their
guidelines for users:
" You shouldn't normally send attachments to Mailbase lists, unless you are
on a small closed list and you know that all the other members can cope with
the attachment. A lot of people will be unable to read them, either because
their email program can't decode them, or because they don't have the right
word processing software to read them after they have been decoded. You
should also be aware that a lot of people receive email on a central
computer, where storage space is limited, and an attached file can mean they
run out of space and cannot receive any more email."
More information about mailbase's guidelines can be found at
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/docs/guidelines.html
2) If you're going on holiday or simply don't want lis-pub-libs messages for
a while you can suspend your membership. You remain a member of the list but
simply don't get sent any messages - simply resume when you're ready to fill
up your mailbox again. Information about suspending and resuming can be
found at
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/docs/user-suspend.html
3) Lis-pub-libs has searchable archives - find out what you've missed or
whether your question has been asked before. The archives can be found at
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/lis-pub-libs/archive.html
4) If you ask the list for help please make sure that you summarise the
replies you get for the list - other people may be interested in hearing
about the information you have collected.
