Quite right too!
Now lets get this message over to the SHO's please. I teach them that
A/E is enjoyable. I do so because I believe this. I am very worried
about the image that we have in the minds of some of our youngest
colleages.
We are not helped by the concerns about what to call ourselves. Casualty
is a perfectly good label and has some affectionate connotations.
Accident and Emergency is perfectly descriptive and does just as well as
a label.
"Emergency Physician" is fine, but a little americanised. It also smacks
of spending all of ones time in the majors end seeing medical
emergencies and ignoring the rest of the department with its equally
valid activity. "Casualty surgeon" is out of use, but has a certain
quaintness about it.
