My opinion is that A&E will become a consultant based service. We
should work towards this, BUT.......
As this is supposed to be an academic discussion group - anyone
know of any work looking at comparative outcomes of patients
treated by A&E docs of different grades? The surgeons have a lot of
evidence about grade of operator and outcome, do we have the
same?
To argue for the extra resources for a consultant based service we
will need some good evidence. Should the speciality give this topic
a high priority for research?
On a non-academic note:
Cliff - Don't let an enthusiasm for managing the acute patient be
beaten out of you. It is the most fun part of being a consultant.
Managing an office is much less fun than managing the sick patient.
Be very careful in your choice of consultant post (advice available in
private!).
