I don't think this comment is fair.
"cheap"?? No evidence of that really.
"quick"?? Probably not
"untraceable"? Sensibly NHS Directs have taken steps to make sure they are
not this. It is not in their interests to be untraceable. They are actually
much more traceable than a GP.
"Direct" Why not? Compare these:
a) Nosebleed - ring NHS Direct, - call handler - put through to nurse - advised
to press nose etc.
b) Nosebleed - ring GP surgery - advised to attend ooh surgery (or A&E) - get
bus (or car) - park - walk - see triage nurse/receptionist - advised to press
nose etc.
