Dear Sir or Madame,
I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New
Zealand, and am currently researching the trends, changes and situation of
Germanistik/DaF in Great Britain over the past 20 years (as part of my
overall PhD on international trends in Germanistik/DaF). I was wondering if
any of you would be able to send me any information/articles/other
literature on the following points:
* The main factors (political, economic, structural, institutional,
cultural) which have influenced/influence the Germanistik discipline in
Britain in last 20 years.
* Have there been any major reforms in the education system, which have
impacted on the discipline in particular, in past 2 decades?
* Is there a definable emphasis on any particular field of
Germanistik (e.g. literature, linguistics, etc.) in Britain? Or does
every department teach what it wishes to?
* Have there been any clear trends in the discipline in last 20 years?
* How do you see as the future of Germanistik/DaF in Britain?
Please note that I already have copies of: E. Brown: German in the
United Kingdom: Issues and Opportunities (1986); D. Berghahn, E.
Kolinsky and T. Scharf: German Studies in Transition: The Role of
Lektors at British Universities (1997); Tenberg & Jones: German
Studies in the United Kingdom: A Survey of German in Schools and
Universities (1993); and P. Lutzeier: German: Old and New
Challenges. Undergraduate Programmes in the United Kingdom
and the Republic of Ireland (1998).
If you have any suggestions of relevant contacts or publications, they would
be very much appreciated. If you require a copy of my overall research
plan, please do not hesitate to contact me.
