The End of Socialism..? - 10 Years on...
Date: 4-5 May, 2001.
Organisers: Royal Geographical Society-Institute of British
Geographers Post-Socialist Geographies Research Group, in association
with the Regional Studies Association and the School of Social
Sciences, Humanities and Languages of the University of Westminster.
Location: University of Westminster, London.
This is a first announcement for the conference. Further notices will
give details of submitting abstracts for consideration etc. Initial
inquiries can be directed to Dr Tassilo Herschell (University of

The conference will focus on five themes of post-socialist
transformation anywhere in the world:
Institutional Change, PPP, privatisation, governmental structures and
inter-governmental relationships.
Historical and social-cultural geographies of transformation,
including identity politics, gender roles, religion etc
The political economy of post-soc development, including regulation,
the territorialization of governance, etc
The environment and environmental concern in post-socialist
transition: concepts of environment, sustainability, quality of life,
etc
Globalisation, global institutions and political-economic processes
and their implications for developments in post-socialist countries:
globalisation, economic competitiveness, the role of regional and
international institutions etc
