Not strictly A&E, but relevant to most of us. The GMC is currently sending out
discussion documents about revalidation. They want comments / suggestions. Assuming
you have sufficient faith left to believe they might listen, their EMail address for
comments (to be received by 25/9/2000) is:

For what they're worth, here are my comments:
1. You may pick up a Ledwood, but please don't expect to stop future Shipmans.
Nothing in these or any other proposals will prevent criminal behaviour.
2. There is a glaring ommission from your proposals concerning the activity required
by the 99% of good doctors to prove that they are not the bad 1%. That is, the
Taxpayer, via the State and Trusts/FHSAs/PCGs will fund the extra time needed for
busy clinicians to provide the reams of evidence-based paperwork required to
revalidate. Everyone agrees the huge majority of doctors are good and that the
taxpayer needs reassurance about standards, so the taxpayer must be prepared to pay
so that the majority of good doctors do not have to spend their own hard-earned pay
and their own precious off-duty hours proving it. Ask any teacher how many hours of
their own time they spend preparing for OFFSTED inspections instead of preparing
lessons.
