There is a huge problem with cover for events such as motor racing. Oddly enough, I nearly
rang up BARC on Friday to offer to come down yesterday - quite glad I did not now. It is
again down to skills and environment. As I was not there I cannot comment on the incident,
but there is often a jarring disparity. An anaesthetist is very used to maintaining airways and
looking after a critically ill person. However, the environment of a racetrack is very different
from an ITU. Equally, the BASICS doctor is very used to the environment, but may not be so
comfortable with the skills.
