I have just read "The Clematis Tree" by Anne Widdecombe MP. This was
given to me as a gift for my birthday. Has anyone else read this book,
as it tells the story of a family where the son Jeremy is knocked down
by a car and this results in him being severely disabled.
The reviews I have read of this book have been glowing, yet I am not so
sure that I feel the same way about it. Descriptions of Jeremy are in
my opinion extremely negative and based on the "tragedy" principle. I
had difficulty finding any positive descriptions of him after the
accident. I would be interested in others comments on this book, as I
wrote an essay on disability culture last year, and discussed images of
disability in literature and the cinema, so I think I may be seeing
this book in a different way to some of the more general readers of the
book. If you feel this is not for comment on this list, please e-mail
me direct, as I would be interested in hearing others views on it.
Thank you.
