Dear colleagues,
In a previous message we told you about the establishment of a Study
Group on Society-Military Relations During and After Communist Rule,
as one of the study groups of the British Association for Slavonic
and East European Studies (BASEES). The group's membership is open to
all. At present, Jenny Mathers and I are the coordinators; we'd be
pleased to hear, though, from anyone who is interested in playing an
active part in the group.
We would like to tell you about some of the ideas we have the group,
and to ask for your views on these idea.
- We propose to hold an inaugural day conference of the group some
time late this year / early 2001. Venue to be decided. This will then
become an annual event. In return for the funding (a modest but very
useful amount, probably to be used for supporting postgraduate
student attendance) that BASEES provides, we also are honour bound to
provide a panel on our subject at the annual BASEES conference (held
over a weekend late March/early April).
- Jenny is going to set up a web site for the group (linked to the
BASEES site). When this is up and running, we envisage that it can be
used as a notice-board for the group's activities, and can also
contain information of use to researchers and others with an interest
in our field. We'll let you know the address as soon as it appears.
Dr Steve Webber and Dr Jenny Mathers
