>I am trying to track down whether we know anything about one Nicholas,
abbot of St. Ouen at Rouen from 1142 onward.
Dear Patrick,
never heard of the guy myself and know zit about Rouen, but my first stop for
running down relatively obscure folks is usually Ulysse Chevalier's
_Répertoire des sources historiques du moyen âge... Bio-bibliographie_. Paris,
1905-07 (2 massive quarto vols., reprinted in the 1970's), in
spite of the fact that its references will be less than up-to-date.
for a relatively common name like Nicholas you'll have to wade through quite a
few false friends, but i would be very surprised if your guy wasn't in there,
with references to whatever literature there was before the turn of the last
century (e.g., if he was a literary sort, he's probably got an entry in the
_Histoire literaire de la France_), and, of course, to the editions of his
works.
the U. library is on the other side of town, else i'd let my fingers do your
walking --doubt if you'll find a copy in all of Richmond, Ind.
curious he's not in the GC, however. perhaps he wasn't actually *abbot* of
St. Ouen but just "from" there, i.e. "Nicholas de Saint Ouen"?
best from here,
christopher
