I can give this a try. The Hermits of St. Augustine wore and still wear
black habits and leather belts. Perhaps, this is the simplest explanation
for the designation of the building. This habit (or more particularly the
leather belt) became a matter of great controversy between the Hermits and
the Canons Regular, both of whom followed the rule of St. Augustine and both
of whom were engaged in an astounding face off in Pavia (Back there again)
over possession of the relics of st. Augustine. This despite the fact that
while it was well known that Luitprand had brought Augustine's relics to the
church of San Pietro in Ciel d"oro in Pavia, no one had the slightest idea
where they might be. In 1698 a small box was "discovered" that supposedly
contained the relics. The Canons disputed it and the matter wasn't settled
until the mid 18th century when a papal decree declared the relics to be
those of Augustine. all best, sharon
